During my rounds, I noticed that a preterm infant was not gaining weight adequately. The neonatologist’s plan was to continue to provide total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and monitor the infant’s weight gain. I advocated for the need to start the infant on early trophic feeds, which are small amounts of breast milk or formula given by mouth to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract. I explained that this would help promote the infant’s intestinal development and reduce the risk of feeding intolerance and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). After discussing with the neonatologist and dietitian, we decided to start the infant on early trophic feeds. As a result, the infant improved significantly and was eventually able to take full enteral feedings.
- Intervention: Coordinated a multidisciplinary team to address a neonate’s respiratory distress syndrome (RDS):
