Sample interview questions: How do you handle patients who require emergency airway management during anesthesia?
Sample answer:
- Assess the patient’s condition and airway status:
- Check for signs of airway obstruction, such as stridor, dyspnea, or cyanosis.
- Evaluate the patient’s respiratory effort and oxygen saturation.
- Auscultate the lungs for abnormal breath sounds.
- Provide supplemental oxygen:
- Administer high-flow oxygen via face mask or nasal cannula.
- Consider intubation if the patient is hypoxemic or has difficulty maintaining oxygen saturation.
- Position the patient:
- Place the patient in a supine position with the head in a neutral position.
- Extend the neck slightly to help open the airway.
- Administer medications:
- Administer an induction agent, such as propofol or etomidate, to sedate the patient.
- Administer a muscle relaxant, such as succinylcholine or rocuronium, to facilitate intubation.
- Perform endotracheal intubation:
- Insert a laryngoscope into the patient’s mouth and visualize the vocal cords.
- Pass an endotracheal tube through the vocal cords and into the trachea. Read full answer
