Assessment and Diagnosis
Psychiatric nurses assess their patients to provide information about their mental health and developmental growth status and to identify any specific needs for treatment and support they may have through taking a comprehensive health history (including family and medical), performing physical and mental status examinations (including the gathering of information related to their social and cultural background), and ordering diagnostic tests (for example – like laboratory tests or psychological testing). Assisting in the evaluation of the patient for the purpose of developing a plan of care that will help them reach their goals and identifying any potential risks to the patient or others is also an important component of the assessment process for this role
Nursing Care and Interventions
Based upon the plan of care developed to meet the unique needs of each patient and their overall treatment goals – medication administration (in accordance with physician orders), providing psychotherapy (individual or group), and assisting with activities of daily living (like assisting with self care activities such as bathing and dressing or maintaining a therapeutic environment on the unit by interacting with patients and observing their behavior for any changes or signs and symptoms of distress or acting out), are key important nursing interventions provided in this role
