As a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Nurse, I have extensive experience working with neonates who have hearing and vision impairments. In the NICU, we encounter a range of conditions that can affect a baby’s ability to hear or see, such as congenital disorders, prematurity, infections, or birth injuries.

When it comes to hearing impairments, we closely monitor newborns for signs of hearing loss and use various screening tests to identify any potential issues. These may include otoacoustic emissions (OAE) tests or auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests. If a hearing impairment is detected, we work closely with audiologists and other specialists to develop appropriate interventions, such as hearing aids or cochlear implants, to support the baby’s hearing abilities.

For vision impairments, we assess newborns for visual responses, such as eye movements, fixation, or tracking. We also conduct eye examinations to identify any abnormalities or conditions that may affect vision, such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In collaboration with ophthalmologists and other eye care professionals, we develop individualized care plans to manage and treat these impairments.
