As an Emergency Room Nurse with extensive experience in this setting, I have encountered numerous patients presenting with acute respiratory infections (ARIs). These infections encompass a wide spectrum of etiologies, including bacterial, viral, and fungal causes, and can manifest in a variety of severities, ranging from mild upper respiratory tract infections to life-threatening pneumonia.
Assessment and Management
Upon initial assessment, I meticulously evaluate patients for signs and symptoms suggestive of an ARI, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, and sputum production. I perform a comprehensive physical examination, paying particular attention to lung auscultation, respiratory rate and effort, and oxygen saturation levels.
