One common type of dressing is the transparent film dressings, which are thin, adhesive dressings that allow for visualization of the wound while providing a barrier against bacteria and moisture. These are often used for superficial wounds, such as small abrasions or partial-thickness wounds.

For wounds with moderate to heavy exudate, absorbent dressings such as foam or alginate dressings are preferred.
