Management of Ostomies
Stoma Care:
- Cleanse the stoma and surrounding skin daily with mild soap and water.
- Use a clean gauze pad or cloth to gently pat the area dry.
- Inspect the stoma for any changes in color, shape, or discharge.
- Change the ostomy bag as needed, typically every 3-7 days.
Ostomy Bag Management:
- Choose an ostomy bag that is appropriate for the stoma output and the patient’s lifestyle.
- Empty the bag when it is one-third to half full.
- Fold the top of the bag before emptying it to prevent spillage.
- Rinse the bag with water before reattaching it to the stoma.
Skin Care:
