Sample interview questions: Can you discuss your experience with managing and preventing gestational trophoblastic disease during pregnancy and delivery?
Sample answer:
Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) refers to a group of rare tumors that develop from abnormal growth of placental cells during pregnancy. As a Labor and Delivery Nurse, I have encountered cases of GTD and have experience in managing and preventing this condition during pregnancy and delivery.
Managing GTD starts with early detection and accurate diagnosis. During prenatal care, healthcare providers closely monitor the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy, as elevated or abnormal levels can indicate the presence of GTD. Additionally, ultrasound examinations are performed to assess the placenta and fetal development.
If GTD is suspected or diagnosed, a multidisciplinary team involving obstetricians, gynecologic oncologists, and nurses like myself work together to develop a comprehensive management plan. Treatment options depend on the type and stage of GTD, as well as the desire for future fertility.
In cases of low-risk GTD, such as complete hydatidiform mole or partial hydatidiform mole, close surveillance is often the main approach. This involves frequent monitoring of hCG levels and regular ultrasound examinations to ensure the complete removal of abnormal tissue and to detect any potential complications. I play a crucial role in educating patients and their families about the importance of adhering to follow-up appointments and monitoring their symptoms.
