Sample interview questions: Can you explain your knowledge of different types of intravenous therapies and their administration?

Sample answer:

Types of Intravenous (IV) Therapies:

  • Isotonic solutions: Similar in osmotic pressure to body fluids. NaCl 0.9% (Normal Saline) is the most common.
  • Hypotonic solutions: Less concentrated than body fluids. Examples: D5W (5% Dextrose in Water) and 0.45% NaCl.
  • Hypertonic solutions: More concentrated than body fluids. Examples: 3% NaCl and D10W (10% Dextrose in Water).
  • Crystalloid solutions: Water-based solutions containing electrolytes. Examples include NaCl, Ringer’s Lactate, and PlasmaLyte-A.
  • Colloid solutions: Contain larger molecules and stay in the intravascular space longer than crystalloids. Examples include human albumin and dextran.
  • Plasma expanders: Increase blood volume without necessarily increasing red cell count. Examples include HES (hydroxyethyl starch) and hypertonic saline.
  • Nutritional solutions: Provide nutrition via IV when oral intake is insufficient. Examples include TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) and PPN (Peripheral Parenteral Nutrition).
  • Medications: Medications can be administered via IV for immediate effect or continuous dosing. Examples include antibiotics, pain relievers, and chemotherapy agents.
