Sample answer:
Experience with Patients with Acute Cholecystitis
As an Emergency Room (ER) Nurse, I have encountered numerous patients presenting with acute cholecystitis. I have a strong understanding of the clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria, and management of this condition.
Clinical Assessment and Physical Examination:
- Assess for right upper quadrant pain, nausea, vomiting, and tenderness on palpation.
- Conduct Murphy’s sign and Courvoisier’s sign to detect gallbladder enlargement or obstruction.
- Obtain vital signs and evaluate for fever and tachycardia.
Diagnostic Evaluation:
- Order blood tests to evaluate liver function (LFTs) and inflammatory markers (e.g., WBC count, CRP).
- Perform an abdominal ultrasound to confirm gallbladder stones and inflammation.
- Consider CT or MRI for further imaging if ultrasound findings are inconclusive.
Management:
- Administer intravenous fluids for hydration.
